30. 10. 2008CUIC Reaches Out!
The Cambridge Investment Club (CUIC) today announced plans to increase its role in the community by reaching out to an inner city London academy. In what is seen as a pilot for a larger scheme, Paddington Academy has been selected for participation in a generously sponsored essay competition and also for its students to be involved in the CUIC investment decision meeting.
CUIC was founded in 2001 and now boasts over 1000 undergrad and postgraduate members. Its aim is to strengthen its members’ knowledge and understanding of financial markets, the finance profession and investment strategies. Paddington Academy has been running since 2006 and under new head Phil Hearn has made large strides forward in providing new opportunities for its pupils, many who come from backgrounds of high social deprivation.
The aim of this scheme is to open up some of the same opportunities that more privileged students enjoy to those who are currently studying at Paddington. The Paddington students will enjoy the same level of training in finance and investment as their Cambridge counterparts as well as making the trip to the Judge Business School to present to CUIC members and a selection of finance professionals. Former CUIC member and current Paddington Economics teacher Will Swannell commented
“This is fantastic opportunity for the students here at Paddington to be exposed to some of the same opportunities as those Cambridge. Hopefully they will realise that if they work hard there is no reason why they should not be studying alongside the current members of CUIC in a couple of years time.”
The students are relishing the chance to come and visit Cambridge as voiced by Paddington 6th former Adam Atour who remarked
“Because of the area I live in I've never had the opportunity to do something like this. I'm really excited as it gives me the chance to be involved with something I'm passionate about and I enjoy.”
The CUIC sponsored essay prize will be awarded on November 6th when students will be rewarded for an essay on the current financial crisis and the first group of Paddington students are scheduled to visit Cambridge during February 2009. If these are successful there are plans to expand the scheme to other similar schools around London for 2009/10.
